"We [i.e. Russia] proceed from the assumption that the line of Armenian leadership aimed at diversifying foreign relations does not imply a cessation of cooperation with traditional allies and a reorientation towards the standards of such associations and alliances that want to inflict a ‘strategic defeat’ on our country," Lavrov noted.
According to him, Moscow openly presents its assessments of rapprochement with the EU to Armenian partners. Russia is convinced that the countries of the South Caucasus, including Armenia, understand that behind the supposedly good intentions of Brussels and Washington lies a cold calculation. For them, this region, with which Russia is historically and inextricably linked, is nothing more than a potential “sore spot” that can be pressed in an attempt to inflict damage on Moscow.
In turn, according to Lavrov, Russia’s relations with Armenia are based on a solid contractual and legal basis, which enshrines their allied status. Moscow has repeatedly emphasized at various levels that it proceeds from this very nature of bilateral ties. The Armenian and Russian peoples are united by centuries-old friendship, shared history, as well as civilizational and worldview closeness.
“We [i.e. Russia and Armenia] effectively cooperate within the framework of shared integration associations in the Eurasian space. Membership in the EAEU brings real, tangible benefits to the [Armenian] republic. One of the main advantages of the Union is the resolution of issues based on the principle of mutual respect and consideration of the interests of member states, which is not subject to political conjuncture,” the Russian FM noted.
Also, Lavrov stated that Armenia remains a member of the CSTO with all its rights and obligations. Moscow is in favor of Yerevan’s full participation in the Organization’s work, as it is an integral element of the country’s security.
In addition, as Sergey Lavrov noted, Russia is practically confirming its role as a key and reliable trade, economic and investment partner of Armenia, as well as a guarantor of its food and energy security.
“Our country [i.e. Russia ] accounts for about 35 percent of Armenia’s foreign trade. Russian business is one of the most important elements of the country’s socioeconomic well-being. There are prerequisites for expanding cooperation; for example, in the fields of peaceful nuclear energy and logistics. Numerous joint educational and cultural initiatives are being implemented. The Russian military base and our border guards act as key elements of the security of Armenia and the entire South Caucasus," the Russian FM noted.
