Armenia faces the test of choosing between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the European Union (EU), Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated in an interview Izvestia.

“Now neighboring Armenia is also going through this EU template, the test of ‘either-or, choose.’ [Russian President Vladimir] Putin also spoke in great detail on this topic at a press conference on May 9. Armenia must decide for itself, it must make its own choice: does it want to remain in the EAEU or join the EU? We [i.e. Russia] will respect any choice of the Armenian [people], but let that choice be made,” Lavrov said.

According to him, if Armenia has already adopted a law on the launch of an official movement towards the EU, it means that the country’s authorities themselves have sharply posed the question.

“If there is such a law, it means that you yourself have already put the issue bluntly. But in that case, let us answer for our words and appeal to the people,” Russian FM said.

In March, Armenia’s parliament adopted a bill on the start of the country’s accession process to the EU. Also, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had previously stated that Armenia’s possible membership in the European Union should become a matter of expression of the will of the people.
