Overchuk calls issues arising from Armenia’s European aspirations a “working situation”
Russia views the legal questions arising from Armenia’s European aspirations and its membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) as a matter that should be addressed through routine cooperation and legal work, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk said.
Speaking to TASS on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Overchuk described the situation as a “working situation” that requires a calm and professional approach.
According to him, current EAEU legislation does not provide for the exclusion of a member state or the suspension of its participation in the union, despite what he described as a legal conflict stemming from Armenia’s growing ties with the European Union.
“We have encountered a certain legal collision, and it needs to be examined. This is a normal working situation, and it should be treated accordingly,” Overchuk said.
He added that Armenian representatives are also expected to participate in discussions aimed at addressing legal gaps within the EAEU framework.
Overchuk acknowledged Russia’s concerns regarding Armenia’s pro-European course, arguing that it creates uncertainty for businesses operating within the Eurasian Economic Union. At the same time, he emphasized that the issue should be handled through dialogue and legal mechanisms rather than political confrontation.
“This is a working situation, and it should be approached in a working manner,” he said.
