Armenia-Turkey and Armenia-Azerbaijan normalization processes are underway in parallel. Mammadov
In an interview with the authoritative Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Ankara Rashad Mammadov discussed the possibility of reopening the Armenian-Turkish border and denied allegations that Baku has vetoed the process. According to the ambassador, Azerbaijan and Turkey are pursuing a mutually agreed policy, and the processes of normalizing Armenia-Turkey and Armenia-Azerbaijan relations are proceeding in parallel.
Mammadov stated that after the elections in Armenia on June 7, when the Constitution is changed through a referendum and territorial claims against Azerbaijan are eliminated, a peace treaty will be signed in the United States, after which both the Armenian-Turkish and Armenian-Azerbaijani borders will be opened.
“The Armenian Constitution contains territorial claims against Azerbaijan. After the June 7 elections, they will amend the Constitution and hold a referendum. After the territorial claims are resolved, a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia will be signed in the United States. After that, the borders between Armenia and Turkey, as well as between Armenia and Azerbaijan, will be opened,” he said.
The Azerbaijani diplomat also noted that the parties are now moving forward in small steps. In particular, Azerbaijan has already established trade relations with Yerevan, ensuring its energy security with oil and fuel supplies, as well as supporting the transportation of wheat and other products from Kazakhstan and Russia.
Let us recall that Turkey closed the border with Armenia in 1993 due to the Karabakh conflict, and the process of normalizing relations began in 2020.
