No backroom talks with Russian President, relations in “constructive transformation phase” – Armenian PM
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has denied reports of any behind-the-scenes meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating that their recent interaction took place in an open and informal setting.
Speaking at a briefing, Pashinyan clarified that the engagement was a working lunch rather than a closed-door meeting. “We had lunch, spoke in a friendly atmosphere, as we always do,” he said, describing the visit as successful and adding that others are free to form their own assessments.
The prime minister noted that the two sides have already agreed on future contacts, including a high-level meeting planned for the second half of June.
Addressing the substance of the discussions, Pashinyan stressed that he did not present any new positions during the meeting. “Everything I said there has already been reflected in my previous public statements,” he said, emphasizing that there were “zero new developments” in terms of policy messaging.
According to Pashinyan, Armenia–Russia relations are currently undergoing what he described as a “constructive transformation.” He assessed this process positively and reaffirmed Yerevan’s commitment to maintaining a dialogue based on friendly engagement.
The prime minister also reiterated Armenia’s approach to balancing its foreign policy between the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union. He said Armenia will continue to pursue cooperation in both directions as long as the policies remain compatible.
“When a moment of incompatibility arises, we will make decisions together with our people,” Pashinyan stated, adding that until such a point is reached, there is no need for additional commentary on the issue.
