Rail link via Azerbaijan opens new chapter in Armenia–Russia trade
A newly operational railway connection linking Armenia and Russia via Azerbaijan is opening a new chapter in bilateral trade, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said during talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.
Pashinyan described the development as unprecedented in the post-independence period, noting that for the first time Armenia now has a functioning rail route to Russia, enabling cargo transportation through Azerbaijani territory.
“Since our independence, this is the first time we have a railway connection with the Russian Federation,” Pashinyan said. “We are already importing goods via this route, and I hope exports will follow in the near future.”
The prime minister emphasized that the restored rail link strengthens Armenia’s traditional economic ties with Russia and enhances connectivity within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). He added that the development comes amid broader regional changes following the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The reopening of transport routes has long been viewed as key component in the efforts to unlock regional economic potential in the South Caucasus. The rail connection is expected to reduce transportation costs, diversify logistics options, and improve the efficiency of trade flows between Armenia and its largest trading partner.
President Vladimir Putin welcomed the progress, highlighting the steady growth in trade turnover between the two countries and the importance of infrastructure links in sustaining that momentum.
The leaders also discussed broader economic cooperation, including energy and agriculture, with both sides emphasizing the role of practical projects in deepening bilateral ties.
