NATO welcomes “meaningful progress” toward peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan

NATO has welcomed “meaningful progress” toward peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, describing recent developments as a significant step toward long-term stability in the South Caucasus, according to the Secretary General’s 2025 Annual Report. The Alliance underscored that the South Caucasus remains strategically important for its security, particularly amid the ongoing impact of Russia’s war against Ukraine. In this context, NATO pointed to diplomatic momentum between Yerevan and Baku as a positive shift in a region long affected by conflict.

A key milestone noted in the report is the initialling of a peace agreement in August 2025, which NATO described as a “major step” toward normalization of relations and enhanced regional security. The Alliance also acknowledged the continued role of the United States in supporting the peace process.

“NATO stands ready to deepen dialogue and cooperation with both countries,” the report states, signaling the Alliance’s intent to remain engaged as Armenia and Azerbaijan move forward with reconciliation efforts.

While the report also reviewed NATO’s partnerships across the broader South Caucasus, including Georgia, it emphasized that progress between Armenia and Azerbaijan represents a central development for regional stability.

NATO reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining active engagement in the region, highlighting ongoing diplomatic outreach and cooperation initiatives as part of its broader security approach.
