Peace with Azerbaijan expands Armenia’s opportunities in international forums: Deputy Foreign Minister
The initialing of the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the adoption
of a joint declaration in Washington on August 8, 2025 established peace in the South
Caucasus, which is also reflected in the work carried out within the framework of
international organizations and multilateral platforms.
This peace enables the Republic of
Armenia to engage more actively in various processes and to advance its own agenda.
In the framework of the Armenpress Podcast, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the
Republic of Armenia Robert Abisoghomonyan stated this while summarizing a wide range
of issues, including Armenia’s achievements in international organizations and multilateral
platforms in 2025, the existing challenges. The Deputy Minister also presented the events
expected during the current year.
“Indeed, the initialing of the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the
adoption of a joint declaration in Washington on August 8, 2025 established peace in the
region and this peace is also visible in the work carried out within international
organizations and multilateral platforms, changing the overall political environment,” the
Deputy Minister emphasized.
He noted that whereas in the past artificial obstacles were often created on multilateral
platforms for one initiative or another, these have now diminished or are entirely absent.
“This gives Armenia an opportunity to be more actively involved in various processes and
to advance its own agenda. It can be said that as a result of the established peace,
Armenia, alongside security issues within international organizations, has also become
more actively engaged in the development agenda, economic infrastructure and climate-
related matters, which is extremely important for Armenia,” the Deputy Minister said.
According to the Deputy Foreign Minister, following a prolonged hiatus in 2025 four
resolutions were adopted within international organizations, including UN bodies, either
upon Armenia’s submission or with Armenia’s direct involvement. The Deputy Minister
described this as an unprecedented number for a single year. Among them are the
resolution dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Commemoration of
the Genocide Prevention Convention, the resolution on the circular economy within the
framework of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and two additional
resolutions adopted within UNESCO, one dedicated to a day devoted to Small Island
States and another on the use of new and emerging technologies in the protection of
cultural heritage.
“Within international organizations, at least since 2025, Armenia has sought to engage
with a more positive agenda, acting as a constructive and partner-oriented country and
enjoying the trust of other partners. In recent years, Armenia has positioned itself as a
state that promotes the positive agenda of international organizations, which in turn not
only creates opportunities for cooperation with a given country within those platforms, but
also makes it possible to transfer that cooperation to the bilateral field,” the Deputy Foreign
Minister emphasized.
Speaking about the challenges and complexities for Armenia in pursuing a multilateral
foreign policy, Robert Abisoghomonyan expressed the view that the challenges present in
the work of international organizations and multilateral platforms are universal in nature,
and that it is perhaps not appropriate to single out challenges existing only for Armenia.
