“It Is Important That It Not Coincide with a Day of Military Events”: Rubinyan on Designating January 27 as a “Day of Remembrance and Solidarity”
The National Assembly is considering a bill authored by MPs Ruben Rubinyan and Gegham Nazaryan proposing that January 27 be designated as a “Day of Remembrance and Solidarity”. It would be a non-working day.
“To date, there is no nationally recognized day of remembrance, and we believe that also taking into account the events of recent years, the April War, the 44-day war, the days of attacks against the Republic of Armenia, and the casualties we suffered in September 2023 - this makes it important to establish a single day,” he said.
As to why January 27 is being proposed specifically, Rubinyan elaborated: “We cannot propose a date that coincides with a specific day of military events; in that case, the unavoidable question would arise - why this day and not another? Therefore, it was important to select a day that is not tied to a military event, but that also carries a certain logic and symbolism. We believe that January 27 can be that day: on the first day we will pay tribute to those who fell in defense of the homeland and honor their memory, and the next day - symbolizing continuing life and unbending will - we will celebrate Army Day.”
