The Russian MFA was asked: "Is Russia abandoning its traditional allies—Armenia, Syria, Venezuela, and Iran—to the arbitrariness of the United States?" "We [i.e. Russia] have repeatedly emphasized at various levels that this is precisely the nature of our bilateral relations. Our peoples are united by centuries-old friendship, shared history, and close civilizational and ideological ties,” the Russian MFA statement adds.
“We effectively cooperate within the general framework of integration associations in the Eurasian space. Membership in the EAEU brings real, tangible benefits to the Republic [of Armenia]. One of the main advantages of the Union is that issues are resolved on the basis of the principle of mutual respect, regardless of political considerations and taking into account the interests of member states.
Moreover, Armenia remains a member of the CSTO with all its rights and obligations. We support Yerevan’s full participation in the Organization’s work, as it is an integral element of the country’s security,” the Russian MFA statement states. “In general, the mechanisms of [Russia-Armenia] bilateral cooperation, in particular, the intergovernmental and interparliamentary committees, are functioning smoothly.
Russia is effectively establishing its role as the main and, no less importantly, reliable trade and investment partner, the guarantor of Armenia’s food and energy security. Our country accounts for about 35% of its foreign trade. Russian business is a key element of the country’s socioeconomic well-being.
There is potential for expanding cooperation, for example, in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy and logistics. Numerous joint educational and cultural initiatives are being implemented. The Russian military base and our border guards are key elements of the security of Armenia and the entire South Caucasus,” the statement notes.
“We proceed from the fact that the policy of diversification of foreign relations of Armenia’s leadership does not imply a reduction in cooperation with traditional allies or a reorientation to the standards of associations and alliances that seek to inflict a ‘strategic defeat’ on our country. We openly convey to our Armenian partners our assessments of rapprochement with the EU.
We are confident that the countries of the South Caucasus, including Armenia, understand that cold calculations are hidden behind the supposedly good intentions of Brussels and Washington. For them, this region, with which Russia is historically and inextricably linked, is nothing more than a potential 'sore spot' that, if pressured, could be used to harm our country," the Russian MFA statement also said.
